The stock's story as a starting point of research

Updated 20 July 2026 6 min read

Research has to start somewhere. Margin’s stock story is designed to be that starting point: a structured narrative you read first, so that every number you look at afterwards has context.

The concept behind the feature

A business becomes easier to understand as a story: why it exists, why customers keep paying it, how healthy its finances are, and what has actually happened to it lately. Once you hold that narrative, ratios stop being abstract. A margin figure means something because you know what drives it. A drop in growth means something because you know what changed.

Starting from the story also protects you from a common trap: treating a cheap number as a good opportunity. A low valuation on a business you do not understand stays an unknown until you understand it.

What Margin’s stock story covers

Each stock story is organised into a few consistent sections:

  • Why the business matters, the franchise and what makes it durable
  • Financial health, the state of the balance sheet and earnings quality
  • The stock’s recent story, what has actually been happening lately

Alongside the story, the research library carries related reports: valuation normalisation for what earnings look like through the cycle, a segment story that breaks the business down part by part, and an industry story on the sector’s structural forces.

How Margin does the work for you

Building a picture of a business normally means going through many different sources across the internet and stitching them together yourself. Margin does that gathering for you and uses AI to assemble it into a full, coherent story of the business, so you start from a finished narrative rather than a pile of tabs.

Each story is also available as audio you can listen to. That lets you put idle time to productive use, taking in the research while you commute, walk, or do something else.

Using it well

Read the whole story before you form a view, and read it before you open the valuation tools. Let it generate questions. The sections you find yourself doubting or wanting more on are exactly where your own deeper research should go.

If the stock you follow is not covered yet, request it, and Margin notifies you inside the app the moment its research is ready. Once the story convinces you, move to valuation and to tracking the expected return.
